Engraved typography: 19th-century design at its finest

To follow up on yesterday’s post about the Sanborn Map Collection, the title pages may be just as interesting as the maps themselves.  They feature lots of over-the-top ornamental typography, typical of the turn of the century.  These are title pages for the volumes of maps for Kansas City, St. Joseph, Springfield, Joplin, and St. Louis, Missouri.

All can be found in the Sanborn Map Collection at the University of Missouri Digital Library.
